"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." Victor Hugo
I have the privilege of teaching 24 amazing fourth graders who are avid readers.
My 4th grade classroom is one where students are welcome, feel safe, and are comfortable to be themselves. This year my goal is to inspire and motivate my students to become confident and successful readers. While my students love to read, many of them are reading below grade level. I need to increase my lower leveled books in my library so that the students who need to access these books have a large selection and a variety of topics to choose from. This will keep them interested in reading and encourage them to challenge themselves with more and more difficult books.
My Project
This year I am using books to inspire my students and allow them to have choice in what they read. Developing a classroom library full of variety helps me to reach all of my students different interests. We are requesting high interest books. Students will have unlimited access to the classroom library through out the year, and will be encouraged to keep track of the books that they read and their thoughts on the books to help guide their future decisions. They will learn how to pace their reading rate and identify books around their reading level to challenge themselves. Once students feel more comfortable with reading, students will also learn to identify and manipulate common text features and language aspects within their reading books for real life experience in analyzing literature.
The book collections and Help-Yourself Book Boxes that I am requesting will give students more literature to interact with that are within their interests.
This will in return help them grow as readers and life long learners. Expanding my classroom library will encourage a greater interest in reading, allow me to have more meaningful and personal conversations about literature with my students.
