"That was the best feeling I've ever had." These words were spoken by a 5th grade student after completing a model of a roller coaster made from only paper and tape. Weeks of hard work and trial and error went into the project. Our program serves over 70 students who have a demonstrated educational need for gifted enrichment. They come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and work together on projects across all academic areas.
Our program is needs based, so all students who qualify are able to attend.
No one is turned away due to a lack of space or funding. IGNITE students require additional depth and complexity in their educational program. They attend class for 2-3 hours per week and benefit from project-based learning activities.
My Project
IGNITE students will be starting a unit on codes and ciphers. In this unit, students will learn about many different codes and will solve samples of each. They will test their skills at designing their own codes, decoding others’ codes and using language to communicate clearly.
Deciphering codes requires looking for patterns everywhere, and it’s somewhat mind-boggling how important this process of searching for and defining patterns and relationships is to everything we do.
It forms the basis of language, mathematics, science and even art and music.
The mirrors and colored overlays will help students identify and decode hidden messages and the glue sticks will be used to assemble our culminating project, a complete book of codes and ciphers!
