Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The students in my classroom lost a lot of time when schools abruptly closed in March. While I am glad we switched from "enrichment" to full online instruction, I still worry that my students are not fully engaged in their lessons and we are losing precious time. It is hard to maintain their attention with the distractions in their homes and daycare centers.

My school has adopted the motto: "Every minute matters!"

And it really does for each and every one of them. My school serves primarily African American students in a large urban public school system in the state of Ohio. Our families live below the poverty line and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many struggles to achieve proficiency in Math and Reading. Fortunately, we refuse to give up on them and our primary grade team has pledged to make every minute matter, with every single student!

My Project

"Tell Me and I Forget; Teach Me and I May Remember; Involve Me and I Learn!" This quote has been a hallmark in my teaching philosophy. But it's not easy to fulfill this mission when you are remote. My students are really struggling with working from home. There are many distractions, unreliable internet, technological issues, and lack of focus. Therefore, when I get my students in face to face instruction, it is critical that I maximize our time together and actively engage them in their own learning so we don't lose any more precious time. Nearpod is a game-changer in allowing my students to thrive! I really believe, Nearpod is the most beneficial tool to meet my students where they are at and will continue to close the gap!
