Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic Rocks Oh My!

My students need 2 sets of Rocks and Minerals Books and 10 Introduction to Rocks Study Kits.

Mrs. D.
Grades 3-5

We are a diverse class of 4th graders that live in a small urban setting. Many of the children struggle with emotional and behavioral challenges as well as poverty. Not one student in this class comes from a home with both biological parents. We love science and to explore our world.

One day when we were outside looking for our own special rock as a way to begin our Earth Science unit, a student found a rock with "sparkles" in it. They were all so excited about it. When I told them that there are lots of different kinds of rocks that are millions of years old they just couldn't believe it. We went to the library and they found out that some rocks come from deep down in the Earth. Well, they just couldn't believe that something so common could be so cool. Well the excitement was wild. Thus begins our study of rocks. The problem is that the only rocks we have are the gray ones we find outside along our paved playground. To experience holding rocks with different textures, sizes, and colors would be wonderful. It's one thing to read about different rocks; it's quite another to hold a rock that looks different from any you've ever seen before and that came from the side of an ocean or deep from within the Earth.

In order for the kids to experience the wonders of our world through rocks they need to hold, observe, measure, record, discuss, write about, and read about different kinds of rocks. There are wonderful introductory sets of rocks available as well as books that are at the kids' reading levels. These books have amazing pictures and content. I would like to have enough rock kits to enable my kids to work in pairs. They could then examine and explore rocks as a way to fuel their wonder and learn about their home, Earth. I would also like for the children to have 2 sets of books about rocks so we can integrate this with a strong literacy connection. Between using hands on experiences and literacy the students will have a well rounded Earth study/literacy experience.

Your help will enable these kids to handle and experience rocks that are outside their local environment. You will make it possible for my students to use brand new books that are up to date and have wonderful photos as well as real science information. This will mean the world to the kids and their education and make them real "scientists!"
