Our Pre-Kindergarten program is designed to provide a child-centered, literacy-focused curriculum to prepare children for success in Kindergarten and beyond. Four-year-olds who have been identified through a screening and selection process participate in a full-day program. In our Pre-Kindergarten program, we utilize a creative curriculum for preschool, a comprehensive, research-based curriculum that features exploration and discovery as a way of learning. This program is fully aligned with our North Carolina learning standards.
Using exploration and discovery as a way of learning, our program enables children to develop confidence, creativity, and lifelong thinking skills.
Social and emotional learning is the process through which children understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
It entails taking turns, becoming independent in following routines, interacting more with peers, engaging in meaningful relationships with others, controlling emotions, and developing a positive self-image.
Sometimes it may be difficult for young children to self-regulate their emotions when they feel scared, angry or sad. That's why the Pre-Kindergarten classes have created a "safe space" in our classrooms. Safe spaces are places where children can go to calm down, be alone, and recharge so they are ready to learn. Experts know that when children don't feel safe or are in a state of emotional upset, they can't learn. Safe spaces are an effective way to help children return to a relaxed state that is optimal for learning.
Through warm and supportive relationships, teachers can assist children to make sense of and organize their feelings and teach them how to develop an understanding of their own emotional experiences. Ultimately, children have to learn how to self-regulate their own behavior so that they can feel happy and successful in the classroom environment. The feelings and emotions washable cloth dolls will help them learn to understand their own feelings -- and will help them recognize the emotions of others.
