Enthusiastic, energetic, empathetic, creative, inclusive, and motivated are a few words that come to mind when thinking about young learners in my class. Our class is comprised of eighteen amazing Transitional Kindergartners and Kindergartners. Within the class, there are gifted and talented students, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners. Despite this, the school has received academic achievement awards the past six years, is a California Distinguished School, and a School For Advanced Studies.
"The innocence of children is what makes them stand out as a shining example to the rest of mankind." -Kurt Chambers
These accomplishments are due to the strong partnership between school and home, and we would love to throw the community into the mix, too. This is a school where high academic standards are maintained for all students in a safe and nurturing environment. The faculty and staff are lifelong learners themselves and foster that love of learning in their students. The faculty and staff work hard to ensure that the record of achievement continues.
My Project
My TK/kindergarten students need quality, interesting grade-level books to read. They have chosen fiction books which catch their interest and increase their love of reading. My students will use these books for both independent reading. There are three ways that Kindergartners read, they read the pictures, they read the words and they retell the familiar story, all good tools when learning to appreciate print material as a lifelong skill. These books will help increase the children's fluency, sight word recognition, and reading comprehension skills.
The books that I have requested are books that students have asked for because they have read similar books and they are excited about reading this book series.
With access to a well-developed classroom library, my young readers will develop a life-long love of reading and learning.
