My students are "Responsible, Respectful, Courteous, and Kind". In addition, they are eager to learn and curious about the world. However, most of my students come from a low-socioeconomic background with very limited resources at home. Knowledge of the world for these wonderful kids is limited to home, their neighborhood, and community, and school. As an English teacher, it saddens me that many of my students do not have access to books beyond school. It's books that can open a world of ideas and experiences for them.
There's few pleasures greater for a teacher than seeing his or her students get excited about reading a good book!
Reading is powerful.
My Project
"If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.” This is how many of my students feel. It's hard to believe that many students come to 6th grade with a lack of reading skills and strategies.
The main character in this book managed to make it to 6th grade without anyone knowing that she can't read!
The story continues to examine her frustrations in life and how she finally learns the skills and strategies that empowered her to become a reader. As her confidence grows, so does the world with all its possibilities. My students deserve to experience this gift.
We will experience this story as a class novel. Students will analyze themes, character development, and plot. They will make connections with their own experiences a student with that of the main character. Reading and Writing opportunities will be provided.
