Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As an English as a New Language (ENL) teacher, I have the pleasure of working with students who are new to our country and will have their first experience learning English in my classroom. I work with students in grades K-5th grade and believe that my students need a fun and nurturing learning environment to thrive in. My school is located in the heart of Queens, New York and many live below the poverty line. My school is a Title III school, and 99% of my students receive free lunch.
My Project
We are working on a school wide effort to help our students learn how to regulate their emotions effectively. We are teaching our youngest learners how to name and recognize their own feelings and the feelings of others.
Through the help of these tools we will be able to help our learners Name AND Tame their own feelings in effective ways to allow for a more harmonious school settings.
In recent years we have noticed an larger population of students struggling to express their emotions in appropriate ways. In an effort to make school wide changes we have instituted social emotional learning into our curriculum and with this project would like to arm our students with tools and strategies necessary to handle moments of anger appropriately. These items will all be located in a calm down corner in the school for children to access when needed.
