My first grade class consists of twenty-four students with a wide range of academic abilities. We have several students with special needs, as well as those that qualify as gifted. We celebrate each students' abilities and teach kindness and collaboration in our classroom. Our school is a national certified STEM school. We have received the A+ School of Excellence distinction three consecutive times.
"In cooperative learning, you have a purposeful, meaningful, and authentic context in which children can sharpen their communicative skills." ~ Lilian Katz I am striving to create an atmosphere where my students can become effective communicators.
My Project
Our school has made huge changes in the last ten years regarding the style of learning that takes place in the classrooms. Our STEAM focus allows students the opportunity to participate in collaborative based activities. Our individual student desks, even in groups, don't provide for the optimum learning environment.
Trapezoid tables would provide a flexible collaborative environment.
This would let the students have more hands-on activities and collaborate with their peers better. Being able to change the tables from groups of 6 to groups of three will support a wide variety of independent and cooperative activities, while also giving students choices about how they learn best.
