Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are emerging learners who need choice literature that excites them and encourages them to keep reading to become life long learners. We are a district with many low income families who cannot afford to offer exciting young adult literature for their students. Our school is predominantly Latino and many of them are first generation Americans. They are eager to read but we need books that excite them. Together we can appreciate reading and become better writers at the same time!
My Project
My students are emerging readers who are desperate for current material to entice their interest in reading. The materials we have to offer them does not excite them so we need to supply more current choices and allow them to learn to love reading! Certain novels will give them insight into communities and settings they may not be familiar with. For example, The Hate You Give is an important portrayal of injustice that is present in our society. They need to understand the importance of being informed and respond accordingly. This aligns with becoming ethically responsible citizens in our community.
