If We Build It, They Will Understand... Multiplication and Division!
Help me give my students the hands-on tools to develop foundational, cognitive Number Sense by using LEGO Bricks for exploring multiplication and division as they build arrays, parts of a whole, and graphing models.
Getting to know my students this year has been such a delight! They are so inquisitive and learn new concepts so fast! They have re-energized my thinking and my teaching! I find myself not being able to sleep at night because I'm trying to think of more ways to challenge them and to let them explore other ways of getting the "right answer." I want to help them go beyond the grade-level expectation to the next higher-level of mathematical thinking.
The more active and engaging the lessons are, the more my students "eat it up" and then they are "hungry" for more!!
I love trying to keep up with them! Third grade is such a foundation building year and I want to help them be solid in their Math and Reading foundations when they leave my classroom. As their teacher, my deepest desire is for them to love Math and Reading in a whole new way!
My Project
I grew up with LEGO's in my house and developed a great love for them at an early age. There have been so many times when we are using manipulatives in the classroom where I can't help but think about how I would use this with LEGOs!
My students love LEGOs too and being able to use LEGOs with teaching Multiplication and Division concepts will motivate them to develop the cornerstone of multiplicative thinking and the reverse - Division.
For Multiplication, we will explore arrays of different sizes and shapes and relate this to multiplication equations, square numbers, and area.
For Division, we will be able to explore different sizes of "Wholes" and show the parts that make up a "Whole." We will relate this to division equations.
