Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English language learners. These students are motivated and want to succeed. These students come to school every day excited to learn and they want to read.
The students can get a bit frustrated, which is why we are working so hard to help them accomplish their goal of becoming fluent readers.
Providing books in English and Spanish allows them to read with family members at home who speak Spanish, as well as sharing books in English with younger siblings. My students need these books to engage them in reading, along with supporting their developing decoding and reading comprehension skills.
My Project
My students need books that they can read and use to build their reading stamina and to build their engagement in reading. Having a wide variety of books will allow students to choose books that interest them and help them build a love of reading. At this time, many of our library books have a reading level that is beyond my students' current levels. I am hoping to add new titles that my students will enjoy. We have a fairly large pool of students new to the United States. The books in Spanish are to help students transfer their literacy skills in Spanish to English and to help them develop their English vocabulary.
