Help me give my students a block center where they can build, imagine, talk, negotiate, and explore the basics of number sense, shapes, and size comparisons.
My students are a creative bunch of "go getters" who enter our classroom every single day ready to learn. We work very hard every day not only on academics but also social emotional learning. Some students face difficult life situations making their focus on learning as well as their interactions with peers difficult.
Through the use of hands on and explorative games and learning tools, my students have grown so much in their social emotional intelligence as well as their academics.
This can be attributed to their thirty minute "free choice" time each day where they can select from a dramatic play area, toy cars, dolls, LEGO bricks, and a light table. With these activities, they learn to share, talk about what they are doing, negotiate what activities and tools/toys they will use and who they will "play" with for the day. One choice that they cannot make is to play with blocks. A block area would be such a boost to their math skills including two-dimensional shapes, three-dimensional shapes, size comparison, number sense, counting, addition/subtraction as well as their fine motor skills gross motor skills, self-esteem, and pride.
My Project
By donating a beginning blocks set to our classroom, you will spark imagination and creativity in my five and six year old students - many who have never had the opportunity to play with such items.
At a time when children are exhibiting decreased language, fine motor and gross motor skills, teachers find the need for building with blocks and creative exploration, more important than ever.
Your gift will allow students to use their imaginations to create structures. This will lead to cooperative play with one another, basic shape identification, size/shape comparisons, number sense, as well as language skills as they cooperate to build a masterpiece.
