My students need a class set of the novel, "Bruiser," so everyone will be able to read their own copy during class without having to share with a neighbor.
My school serves students in grade sixth through eighth. Many of the students come from bilingual and low-income households. They've chosen our school over the more crowded inner city schools. This year alone, our school is being fed by thirty-seven separate elementary schools.
My students would rather be playing video games, so I research books and authors, trying to find a novel that will connect with my students.
My middle school students' experiences outside the home are limited, so I like to take them on adventures through the novels I choose. I want them to be able to be actively engaged in reading and writing. I love when parents email me saying their child loves the book we're reading and insists the parents read it, too.
I love teaching literacy to these kids! I love seeing the light bulbs go off as they make connections and feel success in reading and writing activities. These kids want to escape into imaginary worlds and I relish being the one who helps guide them on that journey!
My Project
Providing an opportunity for my students to hold a book in their own hands will allow them to read at their own speed. They will be able to explore and process relevant themes on their own ability levels. This will help all of my students expand their vocabulary and become more literate, as well as fostering personal abilities to focus and concentrate on printed words.
Being able to engage in and connect with a story allows my students to explore other types of experiences and ideas beyond their own.
It allows them to reflect on their own lives and how they would act or react in certain situations. Hopefully, it also fosters an enjoyment for independent reading they will carry with them into adulthood. Reading should be an enriching experience for everyone.
