This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm starting at a new school in The School District of Philadelphia this year, so I have yet to personally meet the students I'll be teaching, but I am very excited to do so soon. The school is in north Philadelphia, and a significant percentage of my students come from economically disadvantaged households, including some from foster care.
My students are almost all individuals of color who live in a racially diverse and culturally rich community.
I'm very interested in establishing a reading workshop community in my classroom this year that is inclusive of multiple cultures, reading levels, and interests, and that is exciting for all of my students.
My Project
My students have been requesting reading materials that are more relevant to their own experiences, and I think that this book will do that for them. I plan to create a unit around the book that will be engaging and will pull in reluctant readers with the exciting subject matter. The unit will center around themes of inner city life, poverty, gang life, and the mass incarceration of black men. I'm really excited to do this unit with my students, and I know that they will be very thankful to have reading material that feels relevant to them. Please help me make this a reality!
