Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A lot of amazing things happen in our classroom! We focus on creating peace with ourselves, with each other, and with the environment. With peace in mind, we engage with Jean-Jacques Rousseau's essential question, "What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?"
Overall, we have a traditional middle school with a progressive staff that is working to transform into a place of community, personal growth, and academic rigor.
There are approximately 1,000 students at our middle school, and we are employing peace building and community building strategies to help students thrive during the tough times of pre-adolescence. We are striving to create a large middle school that feels like an extended family and is a safe, healthful place for students to learn about content, their peers, and themselves. Our school is a melting pot! About 40% of our students label their "race"/ethnicity as White, 40% Latino, 4% Black, 3% Asian and 2% Filipino, and 1% Native American. They are socio-economically diverse as well. Approximately two-thirds of our students are living near the poverty line and are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. The students at our school are full of life and love of learning. They are eager to grow physically, intellectually and personally.
My Project
What does it mean to treat animals humanely? What rights do animals have? How do we speak up (advocate) for what we know is right? These questions, among others, will be central to students' exploration of the novel, "The One and Only Ivan." In this project-based unit, students will read the novel "The One and Only Ivan," and they will investigate the topic of animal rights. In the process, they will explore a variety of supplemental non-fiction works regarding the humane treatment of animals, the nature of advocacy and the various approaches to community organizing. As a culminating project, students will engage with a performance task of their choice. They will create a public service announcement, an animal rights poster, a song for Ivan, or an animal advocacy website.
Middle schoolers have a strong sense of justice, and many of them love animals.
This unit combines adolescents' longing for fairness and their nurturing spirits while teaching them developmentally appropriate ways to stand up for what they believe. Because it incorporates their interests and their passions, this is sure to be a project students will remember for years to come!
