My students are from a rural area where most are from families who have many family members that have come through our school. Being in a small community, everyone knows each other for many generations and we are much like family.
Middle school kids often tell random, off-topic stories whenever they pop into their heads in hopes of distracting the teacher.
Any day conversations may cover topics of deer hunting, duck hunting, fishing, Fortnite and sing - a- longs and that could be any given sixty-minute class; all while learning quadratic equations.
We often do "walkabouts" where students work problems that are posted around the room. The clipboards can serve a dual purpose; they can carry paper for answer sheets to complete and turn in or use the dry erase surface from their seats to solve and hold up the answer. Students don't feel overwhelmed when working with dry erase, they see it as fun.
In addition, they can be used as a working surface for students while working on assigned activities from iReady, Quizzz, Quizlet, etc while using headphones which allows students to work at their own pace and level for differentiation.
