Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Kindergarten through fifth-grade students all live along the autism spectrum. We are a Title I school in New York City. During this continued time of COVID-19, my students are still experiencing personal hardships, above their respective disabilities, as all live in impoverished areas. Their classes take place in-person and/or virtually, which adds challenges.

It is important to offer positive practice and assistance in areas of communication, language, socialization, and fine motor skills that will ultimately lead to mastery of students' IEP goals.

No matter my students' functional abilities or differentiated needs, these skills are important to foster independence, progress, and growth.

My Project

My students with autism, or as I like to refer to them as "artists with autism," love to explore the many facets of the arts. They have enjoyed our drawing books, which we received already. These books are such a hit with my artists! They want to learn how to draw more and more things. Learning to draw continues to go hand-in-hand with their IEP goals of writing and drawing. I would love to have my artists continue to practice their goals for reading and literacy skills, communication through discussions or questioning, writing, and fine-motor skills all through the creation of their own story books. My artists with autism would use these drawing books, as well as the books in our Arts library, to write and illustrate books of their own. The books they create will be bound with the book binding spines and clear presentation covers for the finishing touches.

Reading, writing, and drawing all encourage IEP goal mastery, increase concentration, relieve stress, improve vocabulary, promote imagination, and so much more.

Drawing is more than just doodling and creating characters. It is practicing the elements of art to one's perfection—lines, shapes, colors, etc.—to develop a story, build communication and self-esteem, convey reflection and expression, create a masterpiece, excite imagination or creativity, and then some. Please give my artists with autism these simple materials to open up a world of possibilities, skill sets, and resources to create imaginative stories.
