Do you remember the first computer you worked on? Or, the time you learned to type? I do. I was thrilled that I had talent and it made me want to learn more. The challenge facing my students is beyond their learning & emotional disability - it is the fact their families cannot afford technology.
You see, my students could easily be left behind.
First, they all come from disadvantaged homes. At least half are adopted and the others are struggling to make ends meet. Therefore, buying anything that could help them educationally is not on the list of things to take care of. Many times their basic needs are a struggle to handle. At school, they are in a self-contained emotional impairment room due to serious behaviors with social skill deficits. To be honest, these kids really care and want to do well, they just need help and a lot of it. When they do get the help they need; they come out on top.
My Project
"A new kind of textbook. For a new kind of student." My students will now experience the most amazing textbooks. They can flip through a book by sliding their finger along thumbnail images of the pages. If they don'ÃÂÃÂt know the definition of a word, one tap takes them to a glossary or dictionary. No longer limited to a single picture to illustrate the text, now students can flick through a gorgeous photo gallery or dive into an image with interactive captions. These apps help students master English at all levels,don't from learning how to read to practicing writing and grammar skills to studying classic literature. With interactive ways to learn numbers, master multiplication, solve algebraic equations, conquer statistics, and more, these apps for all ages make math more engaging, interactive, and fun. I have students for 3 years straight and having a tool like this could help them learn at their own pace - accelerate when possible and repeat when needed.
With all of the technology out in our world today; I don't want to see my students left behind.
If they have to wait until high school or even college before learning with and how to use these tools it would be detrimental to their educational growth. Please help me stop the cycle and help me to teach them with a 20th century education.
