My students need iPads! They are technology hungry and need iPads to enhance their learning with technology and develop skills to be effective 21st Century learners!
We dream of iPads! My students are technology hungry. Their favorite day of the week is the day that we get to use the iPad cart that is shared by 9 classes at our elementary school. And on that day we only get them for 30 minutes to an hour at the most. They need more time and access!
I have 20 Kindergarten students.
We are a small, rural school in Hawaii. This Kindergarten year, for many, is their first experience in school. They are eager to learn and sponge up their environment. I want them to be part of a school, or at least a classroom, of the future. A class set of iPad minis would enhance their learning experiences as well as get them off on the right start towards being College & Career Ready, which is the goal of the Common Core State Standards. Kindergarten isn't just finger-painting and taking naps any more. Our students are expected to rise up to the challenges embedded in these Standards. I want to provide them with the tools to do so!
My Project
I have a dream that my students will have access to modern technology whenever they need. I have a dream that my students can go to their cubbies and get their iPad - instead of a workbook - to learn, practice, research, and create. It is absurd that in this day in age students still have to go down the hall once a week to a computer lab or sign up for a half-hour a week for their iPad cart time in order to have access to technology. That is like having them walk down the hall to get a pencil to do their assignments. Technology is an essential tool in education that needs to be available daily. I believe that there is still an important place in education for the pencil/paper activities, but there is so much more that students can get out of their learning with the access to technology. The iPad can provide that access and opportunity to bring out new levels of learning and creativity.
If this project can get funded and our dream does come true, my students will greatly benefit from enhanced learning opportunities.
I see myself become more a facilitator of education and will use the iPads as yet another tool for learning and helping my students meet and exceed the Standards. With my guidance, the iPads will allow students to have their needs met at the levels that they are at and provide individual challenges for all.
