Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district in Chicago, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My students are diverse learners who have communication and learning disorders. They are lovable, energetic kids who need new technology to allow them the opportunity to communicate and learn. Some have autism, some have receptive and/or expressive language deficits, and some have articulation disorders that make them hard to understand. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students thrive on using apps that are interactive for them to learn on.
While we have gotten a couple of new iPads, we need more so every child is able to have their own iPad to differentiate their learning experiences while at school.
My Project
As a teacher, I try to make learning engaging and fun while at the same time working on improving instruction and communication skills with my students. But that is hard to do when you have a first generation iPads that no longer supports apps that are currently being used in the education field. The iPads will not run any of my apps that I have researched to use with my students. My students respond to technology and the students use these iPads during independent learning opportunities. These are times of free choice to decide on what they are going to learn. Where they learn to be independent and responsible for their own learning while I teach small group lessons. Using the iPad makes learning feel less like schoolwork and more fun while still helping them work towards mastering our skills we need to learn in Kindergarten. I plan on using apps specifically targeting math and science along with other educational standards they need to learn. The iPad case will help to ensure that all students of various ages and disabilities are able to enjoy the iPad without breaking if accidentally dropped.
