Our classroom operates around collaborative learning. We spend our days going from center to center solving problems, discussing literature, and investigating problems that interest us. Bringing technology into these centers, with the use of apps, will inspire, intrigue, and delight students.
This is a very tight-knit group of children.
They have been classmates since kindergarten, and because of that, they have developed a sense of family and community that I have never seen at another school. They give each other high fives when one of them has a success, they hold student-run meetings about things that they need to improve in their community, and they excel at working as a team.
We are a small school located in Northern California. With just under 200 students, we have grades K-8 and one class per grade. Though our district tries very hard to spread the resources around, we have a very limited amount of technology for the students. Although the children do not complain, they are aware of the bigger schools nearby that have laptops and iPads for each child, while we have a computer lab that we visit once per week.
My Project
I plan to use the iPods in math and language arts centers. There is a plethora of free educational apps that I have been saving for a time when I could load them on to devices for students to use. We will: practice multiplication and division facts, fact families, prime numbers; master spelling words; play grammar and comprehension games; quickly look up vocabulary words; and do test prep.
Bringing more technology into the classroom motivates students in a way that is new to this generation, and thus, cannot be replicated any other way.
Technology has reinvented the classroom. When teachers are able to put some kind of technology into a center, they do two things: they equalize the access and they provide a more engaging activity. My hope is that the centers I have created my classroom around can continue to be exciting, fun, and interactive. Your donation will help this happen.
