We are a rural mountain community where people worldwide come to visit because of the outdoor beauty and activities. Our school serves students in grades kindergarten through 5th. We are a small school located quite a distance from larger towns or cities and count on each other and our community. Despite these challenges, my students are leaders in their own learning paths and care deeply about their community.
“Making creates evidence of learning.
Whether it be a robot, rocket, or blinking LED, the thing you make is evidence that you did something, and there is also an entire process behind making that can be talked about and shared with others. How did you make it? Why? Where did you get the parts? Making is not just about explaining the technical process; it’s also about the communication about what you’ve done.” - Dale Dougherty.
This quote illustrates what learning looks like in our classroom. Education in our classroom deviates from the “sit and get” traditional style to a learner-centered and growth-mindset environment. Students make their learning authentic and meaningful through choice in partners and projects. We learn through our passions providing a greater impact on learning.
My Project
This project is all about teaching my students to love and enjoy the outdoors of their small town of Creede, Colorado! I plan to take my students outdoors as much as possible this winter to learn how to snowshoe, ice fish, and cross country ski, which means this project will be a multiple part project.
Outdoor activities help us not only get exercise but teach us to enjoy and appreciate our community and what it offers free of charge!
Creede is one of the most beautiful areas to enjoy winter sports and outdoor fun. The second part of this project is learning how to ice fish. I plan to utilize the ice fishing gear to teach students the how to's and take them on an ice fishing trip. Students will learn how to use the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Dock Runner Spinning Combo on our local reservoir. They will learn how to put the Berkley Trilene Fluorocarbon 2 Ice Fishing Line on their reels and set up the floating mice tails in combination with the bobbers. The hand warmers will help keep them warm!
It is important to teach students how to enjoy the outdoors where they live and develop a love for what their community has to offer, especially the free activities!
