Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in Kindergarten to 5th grade and receive bilingual speech and language services in a Title I school in Harlem. They come from Spanish-speaking or bilingual homes and many are English Language Learners.
My students don't have access to many resources at home, further widening the achievement gap.
94% of our school community consists of Latino or African-American students from low-income households. They struggle in and out of the classroom, yet, they always have big smiles and are excited to learn.
My Project
By helping to fund this project, you will be providing my students with an incredible new tool to supplement their learning while also helping them build technological skills they need to succeed in the 21st century. Learning doesn't stop in our therapy room.
By using an iPad with teacher guidance and support, my students can learn how to use technology for educational purposes.
There are numerous apps that support bilingualism and learning in interactive, engaging, and fun ways. We will use apps that contain interactive books and audiobooks to support their vocabulary, sequencing, and retelling; apps that support phonemic and phonological awareness to support their segmenting, blending, and rhyming; apps for articulation practice, and so much more! Best of all, we'll have the flexibility to do it in Spanish or English.
My goal is to help them become lifelong learners and offer as many opportunities and experiences as I can to improve their speech and language. An iPad will go a long way to helping them access engaging resources and materials that will contribute to active learning experiences.
