Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"...I have a right to be heard! I have a voice!"
-The King's Speech
The 58 children on my speech-language therapy caseload are an amazing group.
They are extremely diverse and come from rich cultures and backgrounds. Many of these students are learning English as a second language and come from homes that speak a variety of languages, including Spanish, Mongolian, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and Ethiopian. The school is Title I and serves a low-income population and neighborhood and some of the children don't have access to technology at home.
The students on my caseload have been diagnosed with Autism, cognitive delays, speech and language disorders, and other developmental delays. Some of the students are learning their sounds while others are learning how to sequence, retell a story, or use pronouns. Others might be learning how to use skills such as easy onset to help control and monitor stuttering. All of these skills are essential for an appropriate and accessible education. These children are passionate and deserve every tool possible to succeed.
My Project
An iPad in my therapy room will provide these children with a unique opportunity that they may not have access to otherwise. This technology can greatly increase the communication skills of children seen for therapy. Hundreds of apps can be downloaded that can monitor data, practice skills, generalize goals, and act as a motivational tool. Additionally, many features of the iPad are ideal for speech therapy, such as digital voice recording capability for biofeedback. Augmentative and Alternative Communication can be created and accessed on the pad for students who have Autism, are nonverbal, or need additional communication support.
At the end of the day, speech-language therapy provides foundational skills needed to succeed in the classroom, social situations, and eventually, vocational settings.
By providing an exciting, engaging tool to improve speech and language skills, we are able to help change the lives of 58 children this year alone.
Please join me in making a difference. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and time.
