I work at a high school located in the city limits that has between 800-900 students grades 9-12 and which is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) School. The IB Program is a challenging curriculum that leads to a diploma recognized worldwide. Students engage in a rigorous course of study, learn to relate classroom experiences to the larger world, gain an international perspective, and develop responsible citizenship.
Graduates of this IB program are considered for enrollment at the world’s top universities and are eligible for up to a full-year’s worth of college credit.
Locally, the University of Rochester extends full scholarships to our high school's students earning the IB diploma and meeting admissions criteria. This is an amazing opportunity considering the percentage of our high school students on free and reduced lunch assistance (75.8%) is significantly higher than the state average of 48.3% which indicates that the area has a higher level of poverty than the state average.
My Project
The International Baccalaureate MYP Personal Project Exhibition is considered the culmination of the students' MYP journey. The students are encouraged to choose an Area of Interaction to use as a driving force for the project and exhibition. The students complete this task over a 6 month period and almost exclusively outside of class time with the help of a supervisor.
The students who submit their personal projects will have a chance to share the impact of their projects through an exhibition in the gymnasium at their school for the day to inform others.
The materials requested such as Marker, Pencils, Crayons and Presentation Boards will allow them to create stations to share out their information at the exhibition. Without these donations, I am afraid the students will not be able to afford the materials to carry out this exhibition.
