Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are in a large, urban district marked by generational poverty and all of its ramifications. We are a school of approximately 1100 students, with over 70% of our population qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

They are creative and knowledge-hungry cohorts of International Baccalaureate students who are expected to earn a diploma or certificate in one of the most rigorous academic and social programs in the world.

Students are willing to commit to the demands of intellectual rigor; I want to support them with the mechanics.

My Project

The Antigone, Love in the Time of Cholera, and the Unbearable Lightness of Being books will be used in the first semester of IB Literature class. This semester focuses on Works in Translation, a unit in which students will evaluate texts not only on their formal merits but also on their contextual and cultural relevance.

The second semester requires students to use the remainder of the texts in order to compose an original oral analysis using the requested texts.

Students who cannot afford to purchase novels will have access to the texts through the funding of this project. House of Spirits and Between the World and Me are two texts studied.
