Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 3rd and 4th grade special education students. My students are scholars at a Title I school, in which the majority are socio-economically disadvantaged. Next year my students will also be International Baccalaureate students in their Primary Years Program. Approximately 94% are English learners. We are a learning center which means special day class students and resource students come together during the learning time. My special day class students in the afternoon get the opportunity to mainstream into general education for science, social studies, music, PE, and our new extending learning time every Monday.
My Project
Our school is becoming a magnet school next year. We will be changing into an International Baccalaureate school (IB) in our Primary Years Programme (PYP). During PYP students' academic needs are addressed. My students are below grade level in reading and would greatly benefit from additional materials that will allow them to practice their independent reading skills. During PYP students are also encouraged to develop independence and take responsibility for their learning. Having these extra leveled books and leveled books on tape will provide my students an independent work station where they practice their literacy skills. These diverse texts and CD players will encourage my students to be independent and responsible learners.
