Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the unique opportunity to serve students affected by Hurricane Harvey in all elementary grade levels (kindergarten to 5th grade) here in the great state of Texas. The students in my special education resource classroom come to me with various levels of ability and ambition. Some are on grade level and just need additional support to complete classroom work while others are significantly delayed and require a modified curriculum in order to be successful. I see students for core subject areas including Reading, Writing and Math. One thing that every student has in common is their love for technology and their amazing ability to easily access apps on an iPad, it’s truly amazing!
Unfortunately, iPads are not readily accessible to special education and so my students are not able to use them to enhance their learning experience like I would love for them to be able to.
I absolutely adore my students. The smiles on their faces and their infectious personalities are the reason I am excited to come to work every single day. I truly believe that EVERY child has the ability to learn, grow and thrive when provided with the appropriate modifications, accommodations, tools, and support.
My Project
All of my students get excited about learning when we are using technology in the classroom, especially my students with Autism. I have found that they will interact more and more likely to complete tasks when given the opportunity to use technology to demonstrate what they know. I have witnessed technology being effective with students who display behaviors as well. Let’s face it, most students will do anything for iPad time! The iPads will also be used for social/emotional development when working with groups of students who have social skills goals. They will practice taking turns with others and using appropriate words to ask for what they want. The iPads will be utilized for district learning assessments and benchmark testing that is ongoing throughout the school year as well as daily enhancement to projects and lessons. The iPads will be used throughout the day, every day!
iPads are perfect because most students have access to them at home and already know how to use them.
It is a wonderful learning tool that helps students to easily access information and extended learning opportunities while affording the teacher time to focus on individual students and their needs.
