This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember how much fun it was to start high school? My kids are enjoying being 9th graders. My students are a wonderful group of freshmen! They are inquisitive, hardworking, and want to learn. These 9th graders are a diverse group of students that are into contemporary literature.
As we start a new semester, I am looking for books that help them to understand other people as well as themselves.
We need books where kids can discover themselves and each other. As they develop into the people they are, they have questions about who they are and how they fit in at school, at home, and in their community. I want to put books in their hands that will allow them to finding their truth and finding their place in the world. I also want them to think about the effect we have on each other. Books are one of the best ways to do this.
My Project
I have been looking for a book for my whole class to read together that teaches them about the importance of inclusion, compassion, and self-discovery while engaging them as a reader. I wanted my kids to enjoy discussing a novel that helped them to understand why it is important NOT to isolate people or marginalize others. I also wanted my kids to enjoy reading a well-written novel.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens meets all of my objectives for a book all of my students can read and understand life through a different lens.
This novel shows what happens when we isolate "others", the lasting impact of childhood trauma, why compassion toward others is necessary, and the importance of perseverance. This book would allow discussion and deep thoughts so we can get closer to our individual truths.
