This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from the highest poverty area in our city. Providing for classroom needs is a struggle for most families, and many students have unmet needs both in and outside of the classroom. Despite this adversity, my students come to school and continue to grow in the experiences we share daily. We remind each other to be grateful for our time together, for a safe place to learn, and for being valued. We are building a community providing and learning together.
My Project
Every student wants to be heard, seen, and feel like they are represented in our schools and classrooms. I have been digging deeper into the books I have currently for student use and examining them for multicultural representation and cultural relevance. My classroom library falls embarrassingly short of reflecting our students and their diversity.
Research supports the need for all children to see themselves represented in literature, decor, learning opportunities, environments, and mentors.
My students need me to take this first step to repopulate our shelves with more relevant choices. In turn, my hope is for every student who enters my classroom to have books that mirror themselves, unfold our cultural differences in a safe way, and know they have a safe place to examine our world.
