Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

How cool is it that with a Touchscreen monitor, kids that couldn't participate like everyone else now can! I teach in a high-need community in a school with a special education focus. We have children with physical, visual, and cognitive deficits attending our school. It is our goal to have as many of these students mainstreamed into the general education classroom as possible. Universally designed products like the touchscreen let all children participate!

The kids in our school are completely accepting of children who are different from them. There is no staring or whispering when a child walks by with a cane or bumps into them with a wheel chair. Even though they are accepted, I know they still feel they stick out and want more than ever to participate like everyone else. Some of the students simply can't control the mouse because of physical deficits they were born with or acquired. While some of our younger children don't understand the cause and effect of using a mouse to make something happen on the screen.

A Touchscreen does not require such discrete movements allowing children with poor motor control to move from screen to screen, answer questions, search the Internet and utilize educational programs. The computer is an excellent way for children with communication impairments to communicate. A monitor with Touchscreen capabilities would allow me to try different programs with the children including communication boards with verbal output.
