it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I want to know how to be a man, Mr. G." That is the most popular response in my Male Mentoring after school program. About 98% of the at-risk young men that attend, live in a single-parent household and do not have a relationship with their fathers or have a positive man role model.
Most of the young men (6-8 graders) are recommended for our after school program by a parent, teacher or administrator because of behavioral and/or academic issues.
Every Friday, the young men are encouraged to dress in a shirt and tie (in which various teachers have donated for those in need). As an incentive for the young men to attend the meetings, I purchase pizzas and sodas for them to have after the presentation. The presentations are usually on a subject concerning a component of manhood and we have an open discussion about subjects such as character, integrity, goal-setting, how a man dresses(no sagging pants), and we even had a tie tying class. Our goal is to set the standard on what it means and looks like to be a young man in middle school. The standard has been set and will not be lowered, I expect excellence, no excuses.
My Project
30 Binders, 96 pencils, 1 easel, 1 digital camera, and a remote for the presentations will help me reach the young men in an exciting and engaging manner. Most of my kids are from poverty stricken homes and cannot afford regular school supplies and uniforms. Donating to this mentoring program will provide the necessary supplies and allow them the opportunity to come a get a road map for their futures.
Every week I plan a presentation and an activity for them to learn from and students demonstrate their learning by creating various projects. These requested supplies will help that effort and the camera will help us document our efforts for future participants. We recently voted officers for our club, so now the young men are learning how to run a meeting and what is now expected of them as leaders.
Being a product of a single parent family without my father in my life, I feel lead to help these young men get their lives on the right path despite their situations.
I can remember how lost I felt without my father in my life. But thankfully, I had a high school Social Studies teacher/coach that mentored me and showed me his life and how to be a man. That is why I am a Social Studies teacher, coach and mentor because of his efforts to help me. In turn, I want to help them achieve their dreams.
