My students need books like The Invisible Boy, and Elmer. The use of social stories allows students reflect on their interpersonal skills without stress and embarrassment.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are precious, but oh, so needy. I work in a high poverty urban elementary school. Most of the school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Many need food assistance for the weekend, and clothing support throughout the school year. The students work hard on their school work and improve each year. Outside of school, most have limited experiences and social interactions. Often, when we try to expose them to new things, they are socially nervous, awkward, and scared.
My Project
The goal of our school is to increase the learning and achievement of students. Our school works hard on this. While we are having success academically, our social skills could be improved as well. Being able to present different situations in a non-threatening way is far more effective than a lecture. I plan to use the book The Invisible Boy to discuss being shy and how some students have a hard time fitting in. I will use Lucy Walker, Nonstop Talker to not only spark a discussion of appropriate social skills, but as a catalyst for writing in English class. I have selected a variety of books on situations common to an elementary student trying to find their way in today's complex and changing world.
