My school has an awesome group of students who come to school faithfully and are ready to learn.
As the school year continues, my group of students arrive every day looking forward to being "Second Grade Super Stars," and doing their best to achieve this goal.
Our school is located in a low economic neighborhood. Many of my students lack the necessary funds for basic school supplies and many have very limited experiences outside their neighborhood. For example, it is very hard to talk and teach about various animal habitats when the majority of my class has never been to a zoo or give a homework assignment that involves coloring, but the student does not have any crayons at home. Nevertheless, my students come to school with smiles and a passion to learn.
I believe that a critical part of helping my students become 21st-century learners, is teaching them not only how to use technology, but how it works, i.e. coding.
My students love coding.
We participated in the code.org initiative the first part of the school year and their eagerness to learn more about coding was put to a halt because my knowledge was limited. I only knew what the handouts explained and what the 30-minute tutorial instructed me to teach. This caused our passion for coding to be sidelined until I learned more.
Now, I have this unique opportunity to grow professionally as a coder. Bringing back the knowledge of true coding to my classroom and being able to share with my second grade team would help keep the continuum of technological growth for students who are eager to learn.
