My name is Cynthia Rosado. I work in a title one school in Sunset Park Brooklyn. The children I work with are all English Language Learners. Some are native New Yorkers while many others were born outside of the United States. As they assimilate to living in the United States, they begin to talk about the sports, music, video games, and television shows that have become a part of their lives. I would like for them to embrace another past time, the Oprah book club. I want each child to own a book that they could take home, read, and discuss with their families. I would like to hold Friday book chats with the students about this book. I would like everyone in the class to own a copy of the book, Noisy Nora. The story is about a child who makes a lot of noise to get attention. Many of the children in my class have siblings. Many of the parents have jobs that require them to work late. It's not uncommon for the students to have to wait while parents attend to a baby. I think this book will help children to appreciate the need to be patient and remind parents that everyone needs to be made to feel special. I also believe that the students will come to learn the joy of owning a book and how being part of a book club can support them as readers, allowing them to build deeper understandings of plots and motives of characters. If every child could have one copy of Noisy Nora I believe we could start a book club and experience the joy of a good book talk.
