Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

There is no denying that computer technology has become as commonplace as the telephone in American society. To make learning relevant to students, this reality needs to be acknowledged in the form of problem based lessons. I want to provide an exciting and enriching experience for scholars and increase reading scores.

I am a 20 year educator who has taught 1st through 8th grade students and gifted students.

Currently, I am a media specialist at an urban school. My teaching experience has allowed me to teach in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Students still learn the same way that they always have: by comparing new information with previously acquired knowledge and skills. However, students today have different preferences for how information is presented, based on their experiences with computer technology. Though I have several degrees, technology and teaching students to read are skills that need to be updated frequently. Integrating literacy into the classroom has become imperative for teachers at all grade levels. State standards require it and research supports its positive impact on student learning. I am always looking for courses, webinars, and other means to expand my knowledge for students.

My Project

We all need a reboot at some point. Even if you are the best and others come to see you teach, a refresher is always a good practice. One of the HUGE things I want is to always make learning FUN. I feel like I already know that…and live by that motto in my media center…but in this season of education where it feels like students are defined by their test scores and teacher ability is measured in terms of data, it’s easy to forget how important having FUN really is. Yes…learning can be FUN! And ENGAGING!!! And authentic…meaningful…hands-on…and everything else. I’ve always had kids come back to see me who say things like, “Remember when we sang our sight words backwards?!?!” OR “I loved it when we played that math game!!!“, but I’ve never had a student come back and tell me how much they loved a worksheet.

The teachers at RCA are masters of creating fun & engaging instruction integrated with loads of rigor and high expectations.

I need to be in this atmosphere to continue to produce quality instruction and life changing lessons.
