Students of our ukulele club in Wichita are passionate, dedicated and determined individuals. Our after school club is a choice they make to attend. We practice during lunch, play at school functions and perform within the Wichita community.
Our club is the true definition of a diverse group.
We have students from all three grades in our middle school. It truly is inspirational to see the collaboration these students have to learn a piece of music. It gives them a sense of power that they cannot get from being in the classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to reach into their passion for the arts. They feel a sense of accomplishment and are extremely proud and supportive of each other.
My Project
Many of the students in our club do not have their own instrument to use. We have eight ukuleles that they pass around and take turns playing. That can be very difficult when we are learning a piece of music to play as a group. With the increase in students wanting to participate in our club, we are in need of more ukuleles to accommodate the growing attendance numbers. Teachers have donated their own ukes and our building foundation helped purchase four ukuleles last year.
Ideally, we would like to have 20-30 of our own instruments.
Our intention is to have enough instruments for every student who wishes to join our club. Having their own instrument will benefit them and the entire group. The instruments stay in the building and are used during our club time only. Many students asked for their own uke for Christmas last year and we are hoping that more will join this year and purchase their own. However, we still need to accommodate those who cannot afford it. We are not a Title I school, but we do have a population that would benefit from a donation.
