Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you were a teenager and ready to get your driver's license? You didn't just show up at the DMV, hop in a car, and go; you had multiple times where you could practice. Education has the same concept.
School is still a place where students can learn and have fun, but now students and teachers are being held accountable for what they learned in the form of exams.
Our school has four quarterly exams and an end of the year exam. My students come from low income homes where they don't have a lot of exposure to academic language. They have to rely on school to be exposed to higher level thinking. My second graders are the first students in our school to be exposed to tests. With that said, they're impressions of testing start now. I want them to feel successful so they don't get discouraged later on in their education.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will help my students prepare for the exams throughout the year. My students are very hard workers and learn so much throughout the school year. When it comes time to take a test though, some of them freeze because they are not used to the format of tests. As a result, they do not preform to the best of their ability. These materials will get my students comfortable with tests. They will be able to learn test taking strategies in a safe environment and also be able to work with partners. When it comes time for the test, my students will not be as anxious as they used to be.
Assessment is a requirement in education and it will never disappear.
The fear and anxiety of testing can disappear though. With your help, you can help reduce that fear and anxiety and help my students focus on what's most important, that they CAN succeed on the exams as well as in life.
