Hi all! My name is Miss Becky and I am the occupational therapist for the Orleans Southwest Supervisory Union (OSSU) a Masters of Education. My district contains many preschool affiliates, 5 elementary schools and 2 middle-high schools. Our school district is located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, which is a very rural and highly impoverished area. The accepted and expected percentage of students receiving special education services within a district should be between 12-15%; in some of our schools we have percentages of up to 30% of students receiving special education services. Many of our students struggle with visual tracking and visual-perceptual processing skills - visual-spatial relationships, figure ground, visual memory, visual discrimination and visual closure, which directly affect their ability to read, write or engage in academic areas without tremendous stress and anxiety.
As a therapist, I am working to establish activities with teachers that offer these struggling students the best possible practices to achieve visual-perceptual processing skill growth, as well as foster peer relationships and positive self-esteem and social-emotional growth.
My Project
I spy with my little eye...a wide variety of visual-perceptual processing activities that will help my students better gain skills in the areas of visual-spatial relationships, visual closure, visual figure ground, visual discrimination, visual focus, and visual scanning.
Visual-perceptual processing skills are needed for successful learning across all academic fields.
Games like I Spy, Highlights Hidden Pictures, Spot the Difference, Pixel Art, Uno and Spot It! are all fun and engaging ways that students can strengthen these skills either independently or through peer play. Visual-perceptual processing challenges should not stand in the way of engaging in academics or maintaining a passion for learning!
