I Spy Tie-Dye!!!

Help me give my students hoodie sweatshirts and tie dye kits to design their hoodies to represent suicide prevention and leadership. Materials for suicide prevention week. Candy for our happy grams for students to send to each other.

My Students

Our school serves a diverse community of wonderful people. Individual classes look like smaller versions of our entire student body because we don't schedule students into rigid learning tracks. Because of this, students learn from and work with peers that are different than themselves. Our school is a place where faculty and staff advocate for students and each other. I love the sense of belonging and community at our school.

Everyone in our building is a learner, and everyone is a teacher.

We are a racially and socioeconomically diverse school serving over 400 inner-city students in the 7th and 8th grades. Most (76%) of our students are multi-language learners spread across 16 different languages. Our school population consists of 84% low-income students, 9% homeless, and 27% special education students. Eighty-five percent of our students function with risk factors that include poverty, homelessness, single-parent families, domestic violence, gangs, learning disabilities, and being a racial minority.

My Project

We have created a class that our students have named ALIVE. ALIVE stands for Advocates for Love, Inclusion, Validation, and Empowerment. We will work to build a foundation of peer-to-peer suicide prevention support. In addition, we will engage in anti-racism work, LGBTQUI+ advocacy and Leadership to build up our school community. We would love for our students to have the opportunity to create their own unique hoodies to promote ALIVE in our school. The cardstock and poster board materials will help our students to promote events and activities to spread awareness throughout our school. The candy will be for our happy grams that students can send to each other.
