At one point, our classroom had 2 "I Spy" books. After five years, they have basically disintegrated from love. These books have a magical draw for beginning readers!
These 27 amazing first graders are from a high poverty community.
Becoming literate adults will enable them to break this cycle of poverty. Being a lifelong reader and a lifelong learner is critical. More than anything, I want to instill that love of reading and learning in my students.
My Project
I am requesting 11 hardcover "I Spy" books to add to our classroom library. These visually appealing books are a student favorite. Children love the game - but I love them for other reasons. "I Spy" books are riddles written in decodable rhyme. Students work hard to read unfamiliar words. These books build vocabulary and teach students to look for details. "I Spy" books promote turn-taking and teamwork. But most importantly, "I Spy" books encourage and inspire my students to become better readers.
In 20 years if someone asks my students "What is your favorite reading memory?" I hope they can answer "My first grade classroom.
It was the best! It's where I learned to love to read!" Please consider making a donation and bringing the magic of "I Spy" to these young readers. Thank you!
