For beginning readers in kindergarten, picture books are the windows that give students their first peek into the world of literacy. There are wonderful books available for young children, but we don't have a bookshelf that will give children easy access and display them in an appealing way.
A few of my students come to school already interested in books.
They have books at home and someone who reads to them. But we live in an area where many children do not have books at home and do not have anyone to introduce them to the information and entertainment found in books. They need opportunities during the school day to discover books.
My Project
The bookshelf I am requesting would display our books in a way that would show the front covers of the books. It would be the best resource to make the books tempting and accessible to children. Unfortunately, children that don't have much experience at home with books sometimes need every opportunity to find that first book that will convince them that books are worth their time and attention. With the front covers showing and the wonderful art found in books today, I believe every child will see something on the shelf that they can't resist looking into.
A few of my students are so excited by the pictures they see in books that they can't wait to share what they have found or ask a question about what the words say about the picture.
I want to see this enthusiasm in all of my students. I believe this bookshelf will take us one more step in that direction. Seeing the front covers on a shelf made for children their size will support all the other activities we provide each day to begin students on the way to becoming lifelong readers.
