Our student body of my elementary school consists of 750 students, 3/4 of which are on free and reduced lunch. We serve approximately 100 speech and language impaired students. Many of our students have very little access to technology outside of school environment. Due to federal and local budget cuts, we are not allowed to purchase materials for therapy purposes. Technology in the therapy setting will allow my students to experience the same benefits of learning as kids across the country.
My Project
Times have changed, so learning should too. I am compelled to integrate modern technology into my therapy sessions. During therapy sessions, I work one to one with a student while the other 2-3 students do busy work waiting for their independent instruction. Instead I would like 3 iPads to keep my students actively engaged in articulation or language drills while I instruct the other student. These materials will be used for the sole purpose of including technology into speech and language therapy sessions to improve communication skills. Applications will be utilized to reinforce appropriate speech sounds as well as drill practice.
This project will allow speech impaired students to utilize technology in the therapy sessions.
It will keep therapy sessions interesting and the children motivated to learn. Keeping the sessions fun will keep them engaged and they won't even realize its work! Technology in the speech therapy sessions creates more diverse opportunities for students to practice and master communication skills that will carryover into the regular education setting. This will intern benefit their education.
