My students are in kindergarten through fifth grade with a variety of learning needs who attend a public school in an urban area in Pennsylvania. I teach at a Title I school where many of my students participate in the free school lunch program and Backpack Initiative food on the weekends.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
They want to be in school because they want to learn everything they can to be successful in the future.
My Project
It’s no secret that the key to becoming a more fluent reader is practice, practice, and more practice! The materials from this project will give my students the ability to listen, listen, and listen again to their own recording. It will provide me with opportunities to teach my students to listen for inaccuracies, automaticity, and prosody which will help them become reflective and ultimately more fluent readers.
For all students, the key to deepening their math understanding lies in communication.
Talking one's way through a problem, listening to others' solutions, and writing about the steps one took to solve the problem can help students to organize and consolidate their math thinking. Communication is, in fact, one of the five important NCTM process standards in mathematics. The headphones will help my students talk through problems, building skills to communicate their thinking without the obstacle of knowing how to spell and clearly convey every thought.
