I would describe the kids I teach as inquisitive, caring and balls of energy. I teach special needs students in grades two and four. Being part of a team of five teachers, we are on the front lines of teaching these sponges for knowledge. Utilizing research-based and hands-on strategies, auditory and visual learning techniques really match each child's unique learning style.
Each of my kids is unique in their own way.
While one kid may learn with a hands-on approach, another may just need to hear it. Many of my children have dyslexia where they reverse numbers or letters. But I also teach children who have ADHD, Autism, speech and language delays, developmental delays and other health impairments. So to reach each and every one of their special personalities, I use centers in my classroom. We also use many positive reinforcers at school such as a point system where they can buy things like teacher's chair, small snacks or raffle tickets. They also get rewarded monthly if they reach their behavior goals. Our school is a fun and interactive environment where learning and strengthening our minds is the goal.
My Project
We are asking for odds and ends to help with all areas of our day. In our Harry Potter inspired room, I teach a fourth grade resource room and do interventions with 2nd and 3rd grade special needs kids as well. All of my kids love to learn, are hands on learners and love school. I love to bring in hands on activities to correspond with our lessons. The vinyl we will use for activities that I cut with my Cricut machine, such activities include making stickers to place on the walls of our room or on poster boards to make Anchor charts. We also use the vinyl to mark where things go in the room for organizational purposes. The organization storage unit will be one of those items we will create labels for as well. This will house all the paperclips, staples, rubber bands and such things that the kids use daily.
Our room is much like a home, we use a lot of the principles that parents and guardians incorporate in their homes.
I try to make it physically and emotionally comfortable. In order to make it even more inviting, I used a theme that I am passionate about, Harry Potter! I asked for a puzzle to tie into our fun Fridays. This will give us some time to get to know each other, have down time, and work as a team to decorate our room. The last item we need are reading trackers. I have many kiddos that use their finger to track but most do not track at all. So to teach basic reading skills of tracking we need these cards to help track and make reading fun again! All these odds and ends will help round out our room!
