I am a first year 2nd grade teacher working at a Title 1 school in Northern California. This year has really been difficult. A month into the school year my classroom was vandalised. Holes were put into the walls, white board and door. Shattered glass from the smashed computer, TV, and overhead projector littered the room. The kids art work laid tattered on the classroom floor. Although it has been 6 months since this vandalism occured, I have yet to have the funds available to get the TV, computer, or overhead projector repaired or replaced. The overhead projector I am currently using is a loaner and is so loud I must unplug it to hear the children talk. Back and forth I go 8-12 times each day plugging it in and unplugging it. Everyday my students ask if we are going to get an overhead projector that works (the first loaner started smoking!) These kids have learned so much and boy do they love to teach one another! The overhead projector is a fabulous tool for them to use but because it's so loud and doesn't project a clear picture the students get frustrated. Many times they give up trying to teach. Often they'll ask why they're the only ones who don't have a computer,TV, or overhead projector. This is a difficult question to answer. Although TV and computers are important tools to build students' knowledge, I believe an overhead projector is essential especially since I have limited whiteboard space (it was partially destroyed). With your help, the students will get what they deserve--the chance to shine while teaching each other.
