This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 1st-4th graders representing over 20 zip codes from around Baltimore City. Our students are diverse and they represent the best of what humanity has to offer. My students are building their understanding of the world and are inspired to mold their future with the seeds of positivity and love.
My mission is to create an environment where students' humanity is affirmed through sensorial, social-emotional, and cultural learning in the spirit of Maria Montessori.
It has been truly inspirational to see the hard work our students put in their studies. For our students to continue growing we need to provide a welcoming and abundantly resourced environment. Our students not only need this from me, but they deserve to have a first-rate Montessori classroom and learning experience! My Project
A Sensory Corner and Sensory Hallway is a specially designed area which combines a range of stimuli to help individuals develop and engage their senses. These can include lights, colors, sounds, sensory soft play objects, and aromas all within a safe environment that allows the person using it to explore and interact without risk. Students with special needs often require sensory devices to help them cope with anxiety and ADHD. It also helps them build fine motor skills, problem-solving skills, and other cognitive skills.
Access to these resources will help at-risk students and students with developmental disabilities learn how to interact with the world around them, but in a safe environment that builds up their confidence and their ability.
Providing access to a safe space for students with sensory needs will dramatically increase quality learning time for our students. Here are some important benefits of having a sensory corner and hallway in our school-
