Help me give my students books that represent all of us, regardless of our backgrounds, abilities, and skin color, so we can create positive attitudes towards those differences at an early age.
I am a reading teacher for grades kindergarten-5th grade in a Title I school in Raleigh, NC. Many of my students speak a different language at home. They are a diverse group of students who have many differences. What they have in common is their desire to learn to read. Reading opens a whole new world for children. I want to give my students every opportunity to become lovers of reading, that will lead to a lifetime of learning.
My Project
It is important for my classroom library to include books that represent everyone. My students should be able to see themselves in the texts that surround them, so they feel seen and accepted.
I want to include books in my classroom library that represent people with different abilities, skin color, ethnic backgrounds, and family dynamics.
Exposing students to the differences and similarities in each other through literacy helps to foster a positive attitude towards our peers and can lead to quality conversations about diversity. When students hear diverse books being read to them and see diverse books in their classroom library, they will be encouraged to read them.
The titles I have chosen are highly engaging, which will encourage my students to read them independently and share them with others. They will help my students learn about others and develop a positive attitude towards the differences reflected in others.
