This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember the fear and anxiety of Freshman year in high school? It can be traumatizing entering a new environment where you're constantly told that every decision you make will impact the rest of your life. I currently teach 9th grade English in one of the most diversified public high schools in Humble, Texas where "Best is the Standard"! My students come from all walks of life, but they have one thing in common: a love for learning and growth.
My students are eager to engage in any challenge that comes their way because they believe in our class motto: Progress not Perfection!
Having a growth mindset is at the core of everything we do. We've worked hard to foster a classroom environment full of support, guidance, kindness and challenges. However, due to the diverse nature of my student's backgrounds, I often find students who lack the basics required to maximize their potential in the classroom. Yet, they remain fearless when it comes to tackling any new material that is placed in front of them. However, in order to accomplish their goals, they need to be properly prepared to engage the world around them.
My Project
This project is designed to provide students with a wide variety of young adult novels to choose from during independent reading in the English I classroom. When students can form connections with the literature they read, then they are more likely to enjoy reading. The goal is to create lifelong learners by creating lifelong readers.
Representation in literature is important, and when students see themselves when they read, their love for reading increases.
In an attempt to foster a classroom culture of reading, students are given choice in what they read. However, it is equally important that the books students have to choose from are representative of who they are.
